Check the services you use

Smart speakers work best when they support your music services, phone platform, smart-home devices, and language preferences. Confirm whether multiple speakers can form a stereo pair or synchronized group and whether those features require the same brand. Read the exact device specification for wireless connectivity, audio inputs, and supported formats; similarly named products may have different capabilities.

Inspect privacy controls

Look for a physical microphone mute control, a clear indicator when microphones are disabled, and app settings for voice history and deletion. Read how the vendor describes wake-word detection, cloud processing, and account sharing. A privacy setting may change convenience features, so check its effect before purchase. For a household device, explain the controls to everyone who may be recorded or use the assistant.

Consider the room and upkeep

Compare footprint, power connection, volume controls, portability, and whether the speaker can still play audio when internet access is unavailable. A larger speaker may suit a living room, while a compact model fits a bedside table. Check app support, software update history, and how the product behaves if a service is discontinued. Choose based on the music and controls you will use, not just assistant novelty.
