Compare coverage conditions

Read the policy schedule and wording to see who is insured, which benefits apply, what counts as a covered hospitalisation and how sub-limits or co-payments work. An advertised feature may be subject to conditions. Check the definition of a network hospital and whether the policy requires prior approval for a cashless request.

Look for limits and exclusions

Review waiting periods, exclusions, room-related limits, pre-existing condition provisions and renewal conditions before purchase. If a term is unclear, ask the insurer or intermediary for a written explanation and compare the answer with the policy document. Disclose relevant information accurately in the proposal; incomplete answers can complicate a later claim.

Prepare for a claim

Save the policy number, insurer helpline and claim documents somewhere accessible to the family. Ask what records are needed for planned and emergency care, and keep bills, prescriptions and discharge papers. IRDAI's health guidance explains policyholder concepts, while the contract governs a particular claim. Rules and product features change, so use current documents.
