Use AIS as a Tax Cross-Check, Not a Complete Return

The Annual Information Statement can help reconcile reported financial information, but the Income Tax Department says it may not include everything.

What the statement is for

The Annual Information Statement presents information currently available to the Income Tax Department, including reported items from information sources. It can help a taxpayer review entries such as tax deducted or other reported transactions. It is a useful reconciliation aid, not a substitute for checking one's own bank, employer and investment records.

Reconcile before filing

Compare AIS entries with source documents and identify mismatches, duplicates or items you do not recognise. The portal provides a taxpayer feedback mechanism for relevant information, but feedback is not a substitute for reporting income correctly under the law. Keep copies of evidence and note any response or updated status as part of your tax file.

Use current, secure tax services

Access AIS by navigating from the official e-filing portal rather than opening links in unsolicited messages. The department notes that AIS may not show all information relevant to a return, so review applicable forms, rules and records for the tax year. For uncertain tax treatment, consult current official guidance or a qualified tax professional.
