Know whether your home, workplace or route is in a flood-prone or coastal area and identify the nearest official shelter or evacuation route. Secure loose objects and check essential supplies before a warning arrives. Keep medicines, identity records, drinking water and charging options ready in a portable kit.
Act on official warnings
Monitor alerts from the India Meteorological Department and local administration rather than relying on unverified social posts. If authorities advise evacuation, leave early and use designated routes. Avoid beaches, flooded crossings and fallen wires. Conditions can deteriorate quickly, so do not wait for visible damage before following an official instruction.
Stay away from hazards afterward
Return only when authorities say it is safe. Treat floodwater, damaged buildings, unstable trees and downed power lines as dangerous, and report hazards through local emergency services. NDMA's cyclone preparedness guidance lists household actions, but local orders take priority during a real event and may differ by district.
