Sort Household Waste Before It Reaches the Collection Point

Separating wet, dry and special waste at home makes collection and local processing more workable than sorting a mixed bag later.

Keep everyday streams distinct

Use separate, clearly identified containers for food and garden waste, clean recyclable material and household refuse that cannot be recovered locally. Keep sanitary waste and hazardous household items separate according to municipal instructions. Do not put sharp, chemical or electronic waste into a bag that could injure a worker or contaminate other material.

Make wet waste manageable

Drain excess liquid from food scraps and use a covered container that can be emptied regularly. Where local facilities support it, households may compost suitable organic waste using an appropriate method. Avoid assuming every neighbourhood accepts the same materials; check collection rules for items such as packaging, batteries, bulbs and electronic equipment.

Coordinate with local collection

Ask the municipality, housing association or authorised collector which categories and timings apply in your area. Keep recyclables reasonably clean and dry where required, and follow local instructions for sanitary or hazardous waste. Swachh Bharat Mission guidance discusses solid and liquid waste management, but practical collection routes and accepted materials are local.
