Write a Useful RTI Request to a Central Public Authority

A precise request for existing records is more workable than asking an authority to investigate, explain or create information.

Ask for records you can identify

Frame the request around documents, data, orders or correspondence likely held by the authority. Name the subject, office, relevant period and record type as clearly as possible. Broad questions such as asking why a decision was made may not identify a record, while a request for the order or file note is more concrete.

Choose the proper jurisdiction

The central RTI Online portal is for applications to central public authorities, not state government departments. Check the authority list and portal instructions before paying or submitting. If the information belongs to a state body, use the applicable state procedure. Correct routing matters because the central portal warns that misdirected requests may be returned.

Keep a copy and follow the process

Save the application, payment acknowledgement and any tracking number. The portal's official guidelines explain registration, submission and first-appeal steps, including how to follow an application. Read current directions for fees, identity details and exceptions before filing. This guide gives general process tips and does not replace the Right to Information Act or legal advice.
